First, if you are in an impacted area, repairing your home to livable standards comes first. And this article does not address those concerns. This article is for those that, with all of the praying and distress, managed to survive the storm pretty much intact.

  1. Whether you evacuated or not, almost everyone lost power and food safety needs to be evaluated. It's safest to throw EVERYTHING in the freezer or refrigerator away but not always affordable. There are articles out that specify exactly what could be saved or must be discarded but it's simple to say anything that is questionable—throw it out. Mayonnaise, meats, fish, most cheeses, prepared foods, macaroni …throw out. Things like ketchup, mustard, barbeque sauce may be salvageable. Butter, which can sit out on the counter, can possibly be saved.  Use the rule: When in doubt, throw it out.
  2. Garbage pick up has been delayed so while you may decide to throw out those food items, it's best to leave them...

The number of Closed Sales for Single Family and Townhome/Condo combined for June 2016 was 2,222, up 1.5% from 2,190 in June 2015.

New Listings for Single Family and Townhome/Condo combined were up 3.9% for June 2016 over June 2015, at 2,254 versus 2,170 last year.

Median Time to Contract for Single Family was down year-over-year going from 31 days in June 2015 to 28 days in June 2016. Median Time to Sale for Single Family was just 72 days in June 2015, down from 76 days in June 2016 (down 5.3%).

Median Sale Price for Single Family was $220,000 this June, versus $185,000 last June, a huge increase of 18.9%.

Median Sale Price for the Townhome/Condo segment was also way up from last June at 16.7%, at $140,000 for June 2016 versus $120,000 for June 2015.

Scams are everywhere.  And real estate scams can be very costly.  
 
Here are 6 red flags to look for in real estate:
 
1.  The deal is too good to be true.
You know the rest of this adage: "And it probably is."  Watch out for online postings that have rents that are below the going market rate.
 
2.  The seller is not familiar with the neighborhood.
Sellers should be familiar with the neighborhood knowing about schools, shopping areas, and more.
