The shelters are filling up with people that have to give up their pets. Why? Because many landlords do not allow pets.
In the Orlando area, less than 4% of properties said they allowed their tenants to have dogs and cats, according to a recent survey by the national online rental-listing company Abodo.com.
Apartments are the main culprits (with large apartment communities in Orlando). Miami had a 22% pet acceptance and Tampa had a 19% acceptance.
Even when a property allows pets, there are usually limitations (number of animals, size of animals, etc).
Property managers site smell, scratches on the floors, noise and the potential for the pet to escape as reasons why most don't allow pets.
Of course the more units available / vacant, the more flexible landlords become.
Property insurance also contribute to the no-pets edict. With more and more dogs being listed on the 'dangerous dogs'' list, insurance prices are going up.
So what do pet owners do when they can't find the right place? They pay additional money, get additional insurance, or decide very quickly that buying a home is their best bet!
